Restoring and Protecting the Beauty of Your Deck and Home

By the time wood reaches your home, it has likely seen at least 30 birthdays. From seed to harvest, wood is put through a lot of environmental stress during those years. Wood can be as temperamental as mother nature herself. An understanding of the properties of wood will help you in protecting and enjoying its’ natural beauty.

Preparing Your Deck or Cedar Home

The key to any paint or stain project is preparation. The wood must be ready to accept the new stain or paint. Dirt, old stain and paint must be properly cleaned and blasted away.

Using the right tool for the job is key. We've all heard this because it's TRUE!

This is why Blaster Masters process works. We use hi-tech commercial grade Power Washing equipment capable of pumping out 5 gallons of water per minute. Our process gently lifts the wood fibers and opens the pours by using a special cleaning agent that has no phosphates or bleach and is environmentally safe. A final rinse of wood conditioning brightener solution is applied. After a couple of days of drying, the wood is ready to accept the stain or paint.

Importance of the Product

To achieve the most durability and beauty for Cedar and Treated wood decks, the right product makes all the difference. Our extensive experience has helped us find just the right product that holds up best for Michigan weather.

Our most popular stain and seal treatment is TWP 100, also know as Total Wood Preservative. Cedar tone and Honey tone color tints are the most popular with our customers. Their beautiful rich full colors are semi-transparent so you can see the wood grains and knots. Color tint versus clear (no tint) helps keep the wood looking newer longer, as well as repel harmful UV rays that “gray” the wood. TWP contains natural oils such as Linseed oil, Tung oil and drying agents. The majority of our cost of materials to treat and finish your deck, is related to the high quality stain/seal.

TWP® 100 series is an EPA registered wood preservative and rated #1 in semi-transparent stains in leading consumer magazines.
• Excellent longevity on both vertical and horizontal surfaces
• Will not peel. TWP® is a penetrating stain, not a film former
• Professional choice for all exterior wood surfaces
• Semi-transparent stain preserves natural wood color
• Repels water
• Aids in color retention
• Dry time is 4-24 hours depending on weather conditions
• Water Repellent Prevents Water Absorption
• Stops U.V. Damage
• Helps Prevent Wood Rot
• Resistant to Mold and Mildew

For solid color wood decks or siding, we often use Behr. Most people have heard of this brand name because Behr products are associated with high quality and available locally at Home Depot. We have also had much success using Sherwin-Williams interior paints.

How Long Will My Newly Stained Deck Last?

This is probably the most frequently asked question. We all want the most for our money. Location and environmental surroundings are the biggest factors in wood maintenance. If you live near a lake or pond, or are surrounded by large trees, your home or deck is more susceptible to mold, mildew, spores and tree sap, versus open living areas with plenty of sun. Shade causes high humidity day and night. Stains in this environment can last 2-3 years, often times longer. Less shady environments can last 3-4 years or more. We use 2 coats of stain as recommended by the manufacturer.
